VMC850 vs VMC855: How to Select the Right Vertical Machining Center for Mold Making & Heavy Production

1. Sizing the Envelope: The Crucial Y-Axis Dimension

In vertical machining center applications, the Y-axis travel dictates the maximum width of mold plates, dies, and multi-part fixture plates that can be machined in a single setup. While the VMC850 provides a generous 800×500 mm travel envelope, the VMC855 steps up to an expansive 850×550 mm travel with an enlarged 1100×550 mm worktable.

That extra 50 mm in Y-axis travel frequently makes the difference between needing an oversized, expensive VMC1060 machine or accommodating your mold bases in a compact, highly dynamic footprint.

2. Spindle Architecture: High Speed Direct Drive vs Heavy High-Torque

  • VMC850 Spindle Standard: BT40 10,000 RPM direct-drive spindle. Zero belt vibration, exceptional surface finishes on aluminum, brass, and pre-hardened mold steel (P20, NAK80).
  • VMC855 Spindle Options: In addition to the BT40 10,000 RPM spindle, the VMC855 can be configured with an 8,000 RPM high-torque BT50 powertrain or a 2-speed planetary gearbox delivering up to 350 N·m of torque for high-feed roughing of forged steel blocks.

3. Decision Matrix: Which Model Fits Your Shop?

Choose the VMC850 for high-speed precision contouring, aluminum aerospace components, electrode machining, and parts under 500 mm width. Choose the VMC855 if your workload consists of large injection mold bases, automotive stamping die repairs, and deep-cavity roughing requiring higher structural mass and wider throat clearance.
